How do I set my VFD to play FWD and REV

Target group: who needs this most in practice

This FAQ is most interested in people who make or upgrade machines and want to control the direction of engine rotation with a simple button or PLC-eat: industrial automatic installers, production keepers, electricians, machine construction for conveyor belts, butchers, curlers, lifting tables, CNC hobby masters, robotic integrators and all who do not want to manually press the VFD keys.

Psychological Pain Point: Why does FWD/REV put you on VFD

  • Fear of Error - that the VFD will ignore the command or lock itself in the error just as the line runs.
  • Waste of time - 2 hours reset of parameters because one setting is not the right and the mass feeling that the VFD is bothering you.
  • Hazard - if the engine turns in the wrong direction, the strap can go back, the retractor can break down the material or something mechanical.
  • Shame in front of a team or party - everyone's looking, and you're clicking on the menu and you don't know if there's a problem in narrowing or in parameters.

Good news: once you set terminal logic, FWD/REV is a really simple matter - two inputs, one COM, two contacts and peace.

How do I set my VFD to play FWD and REV

The idea is that the VFD is no longer operated by a keyboard, but by terminals (digital inputs). Typical: X1 forward (FWD) and X2 rear-view (REV), both in relation to COM (DCOM).

1) Emphasis - that it even works as a cabbage

  1. Find Staples X1, X2, COM (DCOM) at the VFD control terminal.
  2. Make 2 separate contacts (key, relay, PLC output):
  • Contact 1: X1 - COM (in advance)
  • Contact 2: X2 - COM (back)

Recommendation: do not allow them to X1 and X2 active simultaneously. In two-wire logic a lot VFD-the combination is understood as a STOP or a special condition (depending on model and method). Also in typical manuals is shown the principle of terminal conditions in two-line mode.

2) Set RUN commands to terminals (P0-02 = terminal control)

  1. Press PRG/SET (or Program/Enter).
  2. Go to Group P0 (Standard Function).
  3. Find Parameter P0-02 (Command source selection).
  4. Configure: P0-02 = 1 (command source = terminal).
  5. Save/confirm.

This step is key: If the VFD still listens to the keyboard, these X1/X2 can act completely dead and you will lose a lot of time searching for an error that is only in the source of the command. A similar principle is described in various VFD fast settings and manuals.

3) Set terminal guidance mode - Two-line mode (P4-11)

  1. Go to Group P4 (Input Terminals).
  2. Find P4-11 (Terminal command mode).
  3. Configure: P4-11 = 0 (Two-line fashion 1).

Two-line mode 1 is a typical way where you have a separate FWD/REV command on two inputs, and the directional decision is part of the VFD according to the active input.

4) Assign functions X1 and X2 (P4-00, P4-01)

  1. P4-00 = X1 function selection - set P4-00 = 1 (Forward RUN-FWD)
  2. P4-01 = X2 function selection - set P4-01 = 2 (Reverse RUN-REV)

This is it: X1 is forward, X2 is back. The same pattern of adjustment (P0-02=1, P4-11=0, P4-00=1, P4-01=2) occurs in several different manufacturers because the logic is universal.

Mini examples from practice - to imagine immediately

  • Transport line: ADVANCE button for normal work, BACK button only for massage or return products. Never both at the same time.
  • Roller: FWD cheers, REV controlled while changing the roll. Here it is wise to add mechanical blockage or logic to PLC so that REV does not turn on at high speed.
  • Mixer: FWD and REV for breaking the kep - typical with time limitation and security logic to change direction after the stop or after the delay.

Most common errors (and how to prevent them immediately)

  • X1/X2 not working - almost always guilty P0-02Because the VFD listens to the keyboard, not the terminals.
  • VFD behaves strangely when pressing both buttons - this is expected; add electrical blockage or PLC logic that only one command is active.
  • The engine is turning in the opposite direction as expected - check if you have really activated the right input (X1 vs X2), and only think about motor connections. Some manuals also refer to the replacement of two phases at U/V/W output if the direction is physically inverted according to expected, but at FWD/REV control first resets the logic of commands.

Products and materials you typically need

  • VFD frequency converter with X1, X2 and COM digital inputs
  • AC engine (asynchronous 3-fazni engine) or existing engine on the machine
  • 2x industrial key or switch (FWD, REV) or 2x relay output or 2x PLC output
  • Electric blockade (reverse interlocking) or PLC logic that X1 and X2 cannot be active simultaneously
  • Cables and tubes, conductor markers, staples, cable shoes
  • DIN rails and terminals (optional but highly recommended for clean closet)
