Wi-Fi, LoRa or nRF24L01: how do I connect remote sensors?

Wi-Fi is practical with the existing network, LoRa for small amounts of data and different radio design, and nRF24L01 for its own connection between compatible nodes. No choice guarantees universal reach.

What to check out

  • Evaluate message size and frequency, power supply and delay allowed.
  • Separate radio modulation of the LoRa from the LoRawan network. The LoRa module is not automatically connected to LoRaWAN or the Internet.
  • Check frequency execution, antenna, transmit power and applicable country-of-use rules.
  • Include serial numbers, measurement validity time and loss of connection detection. Test the actual course.

A Practical Example

A remote sensor that sends a few bytes per minute has different needs than a camera. For the sensor in the building, Wi-Fi can be the simplest if the connection at the location works reliably.

Common error

The codes 868 and 915 MHz are not automatically interchangeable. Even the stronger antenna does not solve the wrong frequency plan or unauthorised setting.
