How do I recognize a moist filament, and how do I properly feed it and dry it?

Cracking during extruding, bubbles and deteriorating surfaces may indicate a moist filament, but they are not in themselves conclusive evidence. Also check temperature and feed.

What to check out

  • Keep the open disc in a closed container or bag with a suitable, maintained desiccant.
  • Use the temperature and time indicated by the manufacturer of the concrete filament to dry. Check the temperature of the disc.
  • The desiccant must be reliably controlled. The excess temperature may deform the filament or paste the winding.
  • After drying, repeat the same short test and protect the material from moisture.

A Practical Example

Compare the short ejection and the same test piece before and after drying. This makes it easier to distinguish the effect of moisture from the change in profile.

Common error

The desiccant in a closed box is mainly used to help preserve the dry material; it does not always replace the active drying of the already moist disc. Do not use one total temperature for PLA, PETG and TPU.
