Can I run a NEMA 17 with DRV8871 or need a track engine driver?

DRV8871 contains one H-bridge and is intended primarily for brush control DC-engines. One such module is not a direct replacement for a driver of a normal two-phase bipolar step motor.

What to check out

  • First determine the engine type, winding connection, rated current and steering mode.
  • For a bipolar step engine you need proper control of both phases; usually you choose a dedicated stepwise driver.
  • For DC-engine, check start-up or congestion current and electrical and thermal limits of module DRV8871.
  • Do not conclude from the word engine in the catalogue that all drivers are interchangeable.

A Practical Example

For small drive DC-the tape is DRV8871 may be the candidate after the current check. To accurately move the axis with the bipolar NEMA 17 check the appropriate driver as correctly selected TMC2208.

Common error

One H-bridge can steer one winding, which does not yet represent the entire two-phase controller. The trade name does not replace the block scheme of the chip.
